Both Sides, Now

What does a song do but reveal a little of the truth of the singer-songwriter? Both Sides, Now by Joni Mitchell came along as the artist was gaining popularity and chose to reveal herself fully to her fans according to Brad Wheeler in Joni Mitchell: An appreciation of her classic Both Sides, Now.

Mitchell whose music framed my youth becomes for me in later life an example to follow as a true, life-tale teller. Only as I rip off my masks to reveal what is hidden below the surface and expose myself, flaws and all, am I able to touch universal truths from my world.

Are you willing to expose your inner self for the benefit of others?

  1. Exposing my inner self to others is something I am working on being more comfortable doing. I’m finding that it is getting easier as I get older; I guess because I don’t care as much about what others think of me.

    Great start on the challenge!

That’s the question, isn’t it? As writers, we share ourselves (often unknowingly) in our work. But the best songs and stories and poems are about more than one thing, and it’s the undercurrent of the human vulnerability that gives depth.

  3. Lynn, how do you do it? How do you write such succinct little essays that pack a punch? Mine go on and on…rambling…dialogue…examples…lesson learned…yada, yada, yada. I’m taking notes!

    • You are always so kind! I think your writing is perfect as is!!!

Part of my short writing goes back to screenwriting classes where in addition to the script we had to write a 4 page synopsis, a one page synopsis, a 25 word synopsis, and a one sentence log line. Spent a lot of time subtracting:-)
