The fifth Storydame Methuselism Award

While the tulips blooming (1/3 were up!) at Garvan Woodland Gardens yesterday were gorgeous, the real flower of the day was the 89-year-0ld driver of our golf cart!

She is, in her words, a bit “naughty, but not mean.” I found her wit freshly entertaining. Plus as our tulip tour ended she insisted on driving us as close to the Anthony Chapel as possible early enough for us to get prime seats for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra’s The Four Seasons, Vivaldi & Piazzolla.

The fifth Storydame Methuselism Award goes to the Gardens for the wise choice of using fabulously witty 50+++ folks as tour guides!

The fourth Storydame Methuselism Award

A friend shared Heart’s Stairway to Heaven tribute to Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. I saw this when it aired in 2012. By spring 2014 I have progressed in my guitar lessons so I decided to learn it. I am practicing, practicing, practicing…

As I practiced Stairway to Heaven, I realized how many greats of my era have been honored by the Kennedy Center for lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. Names who came to mind include musicians and actors, directors and comics. Since they all seem to be 50+, the fourth StoryDame Methuselism award goes to The Kennedy Center Opera House, Washington, D.C., for the Kennedy Center Honors.

The Third Storydame Methusalism Award

The third StoryDame Methuselism Award goes to the Oscars 2014. While there’s always buzz about Hollywood being less than favorable to the over 40 set, this year’s awards show some contradicting surprises.

Of the five women nominated for Actress in a Leading Role, Meryl Streep and Judi Dench are over 50. Sandra Bulloch is 49. Nominees for Actress in a Supporting role included June Squibb age 84!

Recognizing male actors, Bruce Dern (77) was nominated for his role in Nebraska. Best picture nominees picturing the aging prominently included Captain Phillips, Nebraska, and Philomena.

Most insightful was the extremely funny Ellen DeGeneres (56), who made the Oscars fun handing out delivery pizza to “A” listers and trendy breaking twitter’s record for retweets with a star-studded selfie!

The Second StoryDame Methusalism Award

The second StoryDame Methuselism Award for good news for women over 50 goes to iStock.

iStockphoto provides high quality images at a reasonable cost. My first iStock experience was in 2009 as I searched online for images to illustrate my applied project for a graduate class in Digital Storytelling and Emerging Technologies. The cost was reasonable (I purchased 50 credits @ $70 minus a 20% discount or $56.00) and more than covered the images I needed for my work. So when I launched StoryDame.com in 2013, who was I going to use to enhance my own visuals? You guessed it, my old friend iStock!

Am I surprised when I get an email from iStock around the first of the year about trends for 2014? If anyone knows what’s trending, it is probably the Getty folks!

In Trends for 2014, iStock calls creatives to know trending visual themes and put their own spin on them as a way of keeping fresh. What is listed first among 13 trends for 2014 identified by iStock? Diverse women, “real women of all shapes, races and ages that don’t fit a cookie-cutter mold!

Good news for us “sexy”-generians.
