Hag-gardly Advice

Storyteller, are you as bombarded by advice as I am? Sometimes I throw out an invitation for ideas. Often advice that follows is constructive, useful and delivered in a manner that is considerate and, thus, something I readily consider. At times this advice is a “Yes” moment. Recently a media psychology colleague made a suggestion for a new category for StoryDame that was nothing short of brilliant! Look for it to appear here.

Then there’s advice that comes out of the blue from folks whose motives (and friendship) seem questionable. This kind of advice often feels as harassing, terroristic and threatening as the Grimm advice from the witch must have seemed to Hansel and Gretel in the fairy tale recorded by those German brothers.

“Jump in the oven,” the ugly old hag says. “It won’t hurt you!”

It’s hard to believe assuring words when the kindling been laid, a match has been subtly struck and the fire is blazing.
